Family Time In The New Zealand Back Country

Family Time In The New Zealand Back Country

The weather played ball for the most part except for a little rain on the walk out late afternoon on the second day. The river was quite boisterous and tough to cross in places from the recent we have had .Many of the fish were sitting deep and difficult to get at. Most of the deeper holes held a fish or two and we found a few hugging the edges tightly also..

First Time Fly Fishing On The Mataura River -Southland New Zealand

e decided early April to head down and followed the weather forecast closely, deciding to head to the Mataura on the first Saturday of the month. The forecast for the day was for light winds, slightly over cast with the day time temp reaching a balmy 21 degrees Celsius around midday perfect conditions for this time of the year ! We chose a beat I knew well, rigged up our rods, tied on fresh leaders and fine tippet headed off for the day full of enthusiasm as to what lay ahead. The first we found 4 nice fish sipping off the surface in the foam line.

Fishing For Sea Run-Estuarine Trout - Aspiring Fly Fishing

Fishing For Sea Run-Estuarine Trout - Aspiring Fly Fishing

The tidal sections of the South Island lowland rivers on both the East Coast and West Coasts are well known for their sea run/estuarine trout fishing. Its a highlight on our fishing calender, and each spring my son Louie and I plan a couple of trips to specifically target these fish.

Sea run trout are very mobile and move between the salt and freshwater in search of food, especially during the months of Sept-Dec when white bait enter our river systems in large numbers. They also feed on smelt, yellow eyed mullet, native bullies, lampreys, juvenile flounder, crabs and other small crustaceans such as prawns.

Fly Fishing Close To Home

Fly Fishing Close To Home

The river was dammed in 1958 and is under the control of Contact energy .Lake Hāwea is New Zealand's ninth largest lake. The only flat land around the lake is at its southern end, surrounding its outflow into the Hawea river , a short tributary of the Clutha river , which it enters near the small township of Albertown. A stunning rainbow taken on the swing in the mid section of the Hawea river on a sunny mid winter afternoon.

What A Crazy Couple Of Months !

What A Crazy Couple Of Months !

What a crazy couple of months of weather we have just experienced ! Endless rain, wind and a couple of good dumps of snow have seen many of the rivers in the south Island reach record flows with lakes Wanaka and Wakatipu hitting 20yr record levels and spilling into the townships in places ! This has of course made things on the fishing front pretty hard work with options some days being some what limited. Lake Hawea along with several smaller still waters have saved the day on several occasions and the lake edges have been fishing very well (thank goodness !). Other options have included heading out of the Central Otago and into the neighboring regions that in some cases haven’t been hit so hard with the weather and or it’s rivers and streams have cleared much quicker.

Loon Outdoors Large Caddy

Loon Outdoors Large Caddy

I just recently purchased the large Loon Outdoors Caddy that holds both my Loon Aquel and Top Ride containers one on top of the other. I was finding often that the lid was popping open on my Loon Top Ride container and the contents spilled all throughout my Simms vest pocket ! The new system means no more digging through the pockets on my vest as everything is right at hand and nice and tidy.

Trout Food - The Blood Worm

Trout Food - The Blood Worm

Blood worms are the larvae of midge and they get their bright red coloration from the hemoglobin and oxygen that they hold in there bodie’s. They are commonly found in the softer sediment of our slower moving rivers (especially back waters ) lakes and pond’s through out New Zealand. As they get close to hatching they begin to slowly wiggle their way to the surface, it’s at this is time they are most vulnerable to cruising trout. I like to fish my blood worm imitation’s suspended just off the bottom tied on as a dropper below a dry fly indicator. The length of the dropper is dependent on the depth of the water being fished but usually around 20-30cm is the norm.
